It means that the Cardiff Extra branch will now be one of three stores in Wales to operate a fully electric home delivery fleet. Currently, this fleet is made up of 20 electric vans which make around 5000 deliveries per week.

There’s no word on which type of electric van Tesco has purchased for its 1000th fleet entry – photographs suggest it is a Maxus, although it’s not clear exactly which model. No word on charging infrastructure, but earlier this year, Tesco purchased its first Iveco eDaily, a model it hopes to expand usage of; the supermarket chain said it mostly charges these using local AC infrastructure at its stores, andthat it does work with EO Charging to install dedicated chargers at its depots.

The supermarket chain’s electric fleet has seen rapid growth this year. In March 2025, it only had 720 electric vans, but now anticipates that its online delivery fleet will “nearly double” by Spring 2026 to an estimated 1250 vans. The company also uses four large electric HGVs for its distribution fleet, as well as 42 biomethane trucks – although Tesco says it is is committed to operating a fully electric home delivery fleet by 2030.

Ashwin Prasad, Tesco CEO, commented: “The delivery of our 1,000th EV home delivery van to our Cardiff Extra store is an important step in our journey towards a fully electric home delivery fleet across the UK by 2030. Making this change will reduce our carbon emissions as a business, improve the air quality for the communities we serve in Cardiff, and help us reach our commitment to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2035.”
