The 2026 BYD Atto 2 small SUV could soon be offered with the option of plug-in hybrid power in Australia following the reveal of a new petrol-electric version in Europe.

Full details of the new BYD Atto 2 with the firm’s new DM-i PHEV powertrain slipped under the bonnet have yet to be detailed.

On sale with pure-electric power from next month, the new hybrid version of the Atto 2 doesn’t land in Europe until the first quarter of 2026, hinting at a possible arrival Down Under later next year.

First pictures of the petrol-electric version suggest the new derivative will gain a larger lower air intake for the additional cooling needed for the combustion engine.

Other changes include a DM-i powertrain-specific Midnight Blue paint colour.

Back in Australia, when sales of the Atto 2 EV begin this month it will come with just one powertrain, a front-drive single e-motor that produces 130kW and 290Nm of torque.

Combined with a 51.3kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery that can be topped up at up to 82kW, the Atto 2 is said to be capable of driving up to 345km on the WLTP test cycle.

Full details and pricing for the Atto 2 EV are expected to be released in the coming days.
