Nearly 3,000 Australian owners of the 2024 Volvo EX30 compact electric SUV have been warned not to charge their EV over 70 per cent due to the risk of a vehicle fire.

The Australian government’s department of infrastructure announced through its Vehicle Recalls website late last week that a manufacturing issue in the cell modules used in the Volvo EXC30’s high voltage battery could lead to the cells overheating at high charge levels, potentially leading to a vehicle fire.

“A vehicle fire could increase the risk of injury or death to vehicle occupants, other road users and bystanders, and/or damage to property,” the notice says.

EX30 owners were warned to keep their battery charge level below 70 per cent, which can be set in the ‘Charging’ setting menu on the vehicle’s display.

While a recall would normally be immediately issued, Vehicle Recalls explained that a remedy for the issue is not yet available, though owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Volvo when a remedy is available to carry out necessary repairs, free of charge.

The warning affects 2,815 units of the 2024 model year Volvo EX30 and includes all variants.

Volvo began notifying countries’ regulators about the issue last month, including South Africa and the United Kingdom.

AAP reports that in the UK, Volvo issued a statement advising motorists that the battery issue did not affect all EX30 models and was yet to cause serious injuries.

“Safety is a top priority for Volvo Cars, and while the number of reported incidents is very small, representing around 0.02 per cent of the cars we have identified as potentially affected, and we have no reports of related personal injuries, we are treating it very seriously,” the statement said.

Volvo is one of Australia’s top-selling electric vehicle brands, with its EX30 ranking as the 14th highest selling electric car in 2025, according to figures released by the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
