The 2025 Volvo ES90 electric sedan (well, hatchback actually) has arrived in Australia with pricing that undercuts all its rivals.

The successor to the old S90 lands with pricing from $88,800 plus on-roads for the cheapest Plus model.

Slipping under the Luxury Car Tax threshold, the new Chinese made large five-door is significantly cheaper than the existing Mercedes EQE sedan ($132,500) and considerably less than both the BMW i5 ($155,900) and the Genesis Electrified G80 ($155,000).

In fact, the logical luxury EV passenger car opponent for the ES90 Plus is the smaller BMW i4, which starts at $87,800 for the LCT-beating eDrive35.

A more expensive ES90 Ultra grade will also be available from launch priced from $107,990.

Later on a dual-motor all-wheel drive Performance version is set to join the ranks.

The standard rear-drive ES90 comes with a single rear e-motor that produces 245kW and 480Nm.

Combined with a large 92kWh battery pack, the Volvo sedan can cover up to 650km on the Euro WLTP test cycle.

Off the line 0-100km/h takes 6.9 seconds, while the top speed is limited to 180km/h.

Charging is at a rate of up to 300kW, with a 10 to 80 per cent top-up taking just 20 minutes. But only if you can find a 350kW DC fast charger.

Space is generous, thanks to the ES90 measuring a considerable 5000mm long, 2120mm wide, standing 1546mm tall and rolling on a substantial 3102mm wheelbase.

Luggage space is limited to 424 litres, or pretty mediocre 733 litres with the second row stowed.

Standard equipment is generous. The entry ES90 Plus comes with 20-inch alloy wheels, a 14.5-inch infotainment system with built-in Google and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 14-speaker premium sound system and a 9.0-inch digital instrument cluster.

A head-up display, four-zone climate control and air purification system, heated rear seats, a digital key, panoramic sunroof and a LiDAR long-range scanner are all included.

Choose the ES90 Ultra and Volvo throws in 21-inch wheels, a 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins stereo, soft close doors, Nappa leather seats, heated and ventilated massage front seats, air suspension and matrix LED headlamps.

The only passenger car in an Australian Volvo line-up now dominated by SUVs, something unimaginable just a few years ago, the 2025 Volvo ES90 is available to order now.
