The 2028 Skoda Octavia has been previewed by the radical Vision O wagon.

The concept previews how the family sedan and wagon will embrace sophisticated tech and a radical new design language in its next generation.

Unwrapped at the recent Munich motor show, the Vision O shows how the Volkswagen-owned Czech brand’s wagon will grow in size to almost match its flagship Superb.

It will also embrace the VW Group’s latest advanced autonomous driving aids.

The Vision O shows the next Octavia will be available both with pure-electric power and an all-new range-extender hybrid powertrain.

At the German motor show where it was revealed, execs were hesitant to discuss full details, but they did say the fifth-generation mid-size sedan and wagon will be the first Skoda to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s next-generation Scalable Systems Platform.

SSP will also provide the basis for the next Mk9 Volkswagen Golf that has reportedly now been delayed until 2030.

When it comes to powertrains, reports suggest SSP means the next Octavia will not only be an EV, but come with the same range-extender hybrid (REEV) that has been developed for the Cupra Tindaya also previewed at the show.

If true, expect the future Octavia to package a dual-motor powertrain and produce more than 365kW, while offering an EV-only range of around 300km on a full charge.

Top up the tank with fuel and the advanced REEV should be capable of covering more than 1000km on a full charge, while heralding ultra-fast DC charging.

With the introduction of the new platform the concept suggests the Octavia will grow in size to 4850mm long.

This is significantly larger than the current wagon (4698mm), as it moves into territory inhabited by the flagship Superb (4902mm).

Luggage space also climbs slightly to 650 litres of space (+10L) seats up, extending to 1700 litres with the second row stowed.

Maximising range and efficiency, the Vision O debuts an evolution of Skoda’s Modern Solid design language.

It combines features designed to cut drag such as pop-out door handles, integrated cooling vents on the bonnet and new louvres and sculptural elements.

Other takeaways headed for production include the ‘Tech-loop face mask’, that packages all the lighting elements, illuminated Skoda logo and T-shaped LED light design at the rear.

Within, the Vision O has a 1.2-metre long ‘Horizon Display’ that stretches the full-width of the lower windscreen and is combined with a big centrally mounted infotainment system.

Boosting ease-of-use, a lower centre control panel incorporates a large dial that delivers haptic feedback and is combined with a pair of dual wireless chargers.

There’s also an oval steering wheel with proper physical buttons.

New cabin tech includes an AI-powered onboard assistant called ‘Laura’ and what’s thought to be Level 3 autonomous driving aids that can handle all the driving duties, except in conditions where rain or fog reduces visibility.

Trademark Skoda features include four concealed door umbrellas, along with a removable Bluetooth speaker and a fully integrated fridge.

Inside, sustainability has taken a front seat – literally. The armchairs are wrapped in 100 per cent recyclable polyester, while the interior surfaces are covered in Ultrasuede Nu, a new material derived from 65 per cent plant-based materials.

Expect Skoda to release another closer-to-production concept of the Octavia ahead of its expected debut in 2028.
