A Chinese EV sales sensation appears certain for Australia and it could trigger a new electric vehicle price war.

The tiny Geely Geome Xingyuan EV appears locked in to come here as soon as 2026 badged as the Geely EX2.

It will be a direct rival for the sub-compact BYD Seagull that is expected to arrive in Australia before the end of 2025 at a price beginning at or around $25,000.

“It’s in our plan,” was the closest Geely Auto Australia CEO Lei Li would come to a confirmation.

For 2026? “We’ll see”.

The Xingyuan – its name means Star Wishes – has been hugely popular in China since its launch in late 2024.

Priced from the equivalent of $15,000, the Xingyuan was the top selling vehicle outright in China in the first half of 2025.

It topped the charts with 204,940 examples sold, while the BYD Seagull came in second with 174,912 sales.

They both outsold the Tesla Model Y, of which 171,491 examples were delivered.

In China, the Xingyuan is officially part of Geely’s Geometry brand, but it is sold through Galaxy dealers.

Geely Auto Australia has so far launched two models, the EX5 electric SUV and Starray EM-i plug-in hybrid SUV. Both are drawn from the Galaxy brand, which sells only plug-in hybrid and pure electric vehicles.

GAA intends to have a minimum six models on-sale in Australia by 2028 as it aims to join fellow-Chinese brands such as BYD, GWM, MG and Chery among Australia’s top 10 sellers within three to five years.

Promisingly for the positioning and potential popularity of the Xingyuan, GAA has priced both its existing models underneath equivalent BYD offerings and among the most affordable in their segments.

In China, its cheap price, strong packaging and heavy equipment list have all helped drive the Xingyuan’s popularity.

It’s clear GAA sees the potential for it to be a hit here too.

Based on Geely’s GEA platform, the cherrily-styled Xingyuan measures up at only 4135mm long, 1805mm wide and 1570mm tall with a 2650mm wheelbase.

Commendably, considering its overall size, it comes with a 375 litre boot that expands to 1320 litres with the rear seat folded. There’s also a 70 litre front trunk.

The rear-engined rear-wheel drive Xingyuan is powered by a choice of 58kW/130Nm and 85kW/150Nm e-motors fed by a choice of 30.12 and 40.16kWh battery packs.

The smaller pack delivers a – usually optimistic – CLTC range of 310km and the larger pack 410km.

The system is controlled by multiple driving modes and is supported by a chassis with electric-assist power steering, MacPherson strut front- and multi-link rear-suspension and dual-mode brakes.

Key equipment includes LED headlights, a powered tailgate, 16-inch wheels, Geely’s in-house Flyme audio, a 50W air-cooled wireless smartphone charging, embedded sat-nav dual digital screens, seat heating and adjustable rear air-con vents.

Safety equipment includes six airbags, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, lane departure warning and autonomous emergency braking.

Watch out for a our first local drive review of the Geely Starray EM-i coming this weekend.
