Jörg Burzer is currently still Head of Production, Quality & Supply Chain Management at Mercedes. As soon as he succeeds Markus Schäfer as Head of Development and Purchasing and CTO on 1 December, Michael Schiebe will take over his current position. Schiebe is currently Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG and Head of the Top End Vehicle (TEV) Group. Michael Schiebe’s successor will be announced at a later date.

According to Mercedes’ supervisory board, these personnel decisions are in line with its strategy of “maintaining experience and continuity in top management while providing fresh impetus and a deliberate rejuvenation on the Board of Management.” The upcoming change in the CTO position represents a realignment. Mercedes sees itself in “times of transformation and dynamic market challenges” and is striving for “agile, efficient and innovative vehicle development” that is closely interwoven with production.

Markus Schäfer will end his career at Mercedes-Benz when his contract expires after more than 30 years. He has been a member of the Board of Management since May 2019, where he is Head of Development & Purchasing. He has also been Chief Technology Officer since December 2021. “With Markus Schäfer we say farewell to a highly esteemed colleague, who commands the highest respect both internally and externally,” says Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Brudermüller. “As the architect of our technology strategy, he has been instrumental in driving Mercedes-Benz’s transformation from a traditional car manufacturer to the electrification of our portfolio and the integration of digital systems. The current product offensive clearly bears his signature.”

“Two outstanding managers from our own ranks, Jörg Burzer and Michael Schiebe, are taking over key divisions that are of decisive importance for the future success of Mercedes-Benz Group,” Brudermüller continues. In recent years, Jörg Burzer has taken production at Mercedes-Benz to a new level with vision, consistency and a clear focus on innovation, flexibility and efficiency. And: “We expect further improvements in our competitiveness through even closer cooperation between Production and Development.”

Jörg Burzer has been a member of the Board of Management of Mercedes-Benz AG since 2019 and has also been a member of the Board of Management of the Mercedes-Benz Group since December 2021. In his current role, he manages the Group’s global production network with over 30 locations as well as its worldwide logistics processes. He previously held various international management positions within the company. He began his career at the former DaimlerChrysler AG in 1999 after graduating with a degree in engineering from the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg and obtaining his doctorate in engineering.

Michael Schiebe has been Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes-AMG GmbH since March 2023 and is also Head of the Top End Vehicle (TEV) Group. He has been with the Group since 2004 and began his career at the former Daimler AG while still a student. Since then, he has held various management positions in Germany and abroad, including CEO of Mercedes-Benz Luxembourg and Head of Sales for Mercedes-Benz Cars in Germany. From 2020 to 2023, he reported directly to CEO Ola Källenius as Chief of Staff and headed the Group’s Corporate Office.
