The order books have opened for a new 2026 Tesla Model 3 Long Range that is claimed to be capable to cover an incredible 830km on a single charge.

But there’s a huge catch. In fact, two.

The first is only Chinese buyers have been offered the new ultra-long-range Tesla Model 3. The second is the headline range figure was recorded on the notoriously lenient Chinese CLTC test cycle.

That means the latest Mercedes-Benz CLA (792km WLTP) is expected to still out-drive its US rivals on matching lab testing.

According to details released by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the extra range is unlocked by the US brand switching to a new 78.4kWh nickel manganese cobalt battery (NMC) that is supplied by LG.

A more powerful 225kW e-motor also replaces the current car’s 194kW motor and Tesla claims its new Model 3 can launch from 0-100km/h in just 5.2 seconds, a considerable improvement over the 6.1 seconds it takes for the standard rear-wheel drive sedan to reach that benchmark.

Top speed is listed at 200km/h.

As well as the new Model 3 Long Range, the latest Model 3 Performance has also had its CLTC range boosted from 623km to 647km.

In China the new Model 3 Long Range costs 269,500 yuan ($A57,400) – a healthy discount on the $64,900 (plus on-roads) charged for the current Model 3 Long Range Down Under.

Although it’s not been confirmed yet it’s likely both the ultra-long range Model 3 and upgraded Model 3 Performance will eventually be offered Down Under.
