Subaru’s US factory is now exporting clean power to itself

Subaru of Indiana Automotive has new rooftop solar, and it’s producing far more clean electricity than its new factory expansion even needs.

The automaker has brought a 204-kilowatt rooftop solar system online atop a new expansion at its Lafayette factory. The system went into service in August 2025 and is now generating electricity for Subaru’s operations.

Subaru of Indiana Automotive (SIA) is the company’s only vehicle assembly plant outside Japan. It builds the gas-powered Ascent, Crosstrek, and Forester models for the North American market. Subaru’s all-electric Solterra is built in Japan.

The new solar array generates more than three times the electricity currently consumed by the plant’s expansion. That means it produces a net surplus of clean energy, which Subaru uses elsewhere at the plant, helping cut energy costs while shrinking its carbon footprint.

Subaru estimates the system will offset more than 250 metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually, roughly equivalent to the annual electricity use of 43 homes. Over its expected 30-year lifespan, the rooftop solar installation is expected to generate millions of kilowatt-hours of clean electricity.

The project builds on SIA’s ongoing sustainability efforts. The Lafayette plant was the first auto assembly facility in the US to achieve zero-landfill status, and Subaru says it consistently invests in technologies aimed at reducing waste, conserving resources, and lowering greenhouse gas emissions.

Subaru partnered with Emergent Solar Energy to design and build the system. West Lafayette-based Emergent specializes in turnkey solar and energy storage projects for manufacturers and agricultural operations throughout the state.
